If you can awaken from your slumber...

Wake up

I believe the biggest temptation to overcome in our present society in the western (prosperous) church is this: how easy it is to be a Christian. When something is easy, and doesn't require much sacrifice - the temptation is to cool down - take it easy, and be 'lukewarm' regarding the faith.

In the final book of the Bible - the book of "The Revelation of Jesus Christ" - Jesus speaks to the Apostle John and tells him to write down future events which will occur according to the plan of God. It is a book in the Bible which outlines a prophetic picture of the future. Since the book was written in about 95 AD (and it is now 2014 AD), much of it has already happened - but many believe the final stages are now taking place.

In Revelation Chapters 2 and 3  - Jesus dictates to John to write 7 letters to 7 angels in charge of 7 churches in 7 cities. Many believe that the last church Jesus addresses - the church of Laodicea - symbolizes the church in the last days - as we are the most prosperous church (in the natural) that has ever existed - with access to more resources and more tools than any previous generation. Check out what Jesus wrote to the 7th church below:

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’” - The Revelation of Jesus Christ 3:14-22

It is pretty clear from the above verse that there can be MASSIVE BLINDNESS that occurs with those who are rich in the natural - not realizing they are spiritually bankrupt.

Let me ask you a serious question: How is your relationship with God? How is it really?

Do you know what is on His heart? Do you ever laugh WITH Him? Do you ever weep WITH him?

Basically: Are you living your life for His glory?

Isn't it amazing that this God that we confess - the God who holds the universe in the palm of His hand - who has invited us into intimate relationship with Him - we so often esteem lightly.

Look again at verse 21 - The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Conquers what?

He who conquers the natural comfort and tendencies that wealth brings!

You may say, "Well I am not that wealthy?" Wanna bet?

Check out some of these stats:

  • Got $2200? In this world, you’re rich. Assets (not cash) of $2200 per adult place a person in the top 50% of the world’s wealthiest.
  • If you made $1500 last year, you’re in the top 20% of the world’s income earners.
  • If you have sufficient food, decent clothes, live in a house or apartment, and have a reasonably reliable means of transportation, you are among the top 15% of the world’s wealthy.
  • Have $61,000 in assets? You’re among the richest 10% of the adults in the world.
  • If you earn $25,000 or more annually, you are in the top 10% of the world’s income-earners.
  • If you have any money saved, a hobby that requires some equipment or supplies, a variety of clothes in your closet, two cars (in any condition), and live in your own home, you are in the top 5% of the world’s wealthy.
  • If you earn more than $50,000 annually, you are in the top 1% of the world’s income earners.
  • If you have more than $500,000 in assets, you’re part of the richest 1% of the world.

Suffice to say - if you live in Canada or the US - for sure YOU ARE RICH!

Even the poorest of the poor in North America is richer than most of the world? Who doesn't make $1500 a year (even the poorest welfare recipient is much richer than 80% of the world's population!)

My point is this: even though we are SO RICH in the natural - often times we feel SO SPIRITUAL APATHETIC AND BANKRUPT!

Jesus words have come to pass - we are rich, and our riches have blinded us to the fact that not matter how much money we have - we are poor if we don't have intimacy with Jesus.

I believe this is the greatest test the church in the western world has and will ever face - to have our security and life in God even when we have more than enough without Him.

Is your security in God... or in your good job?

Is your security in God... or in the fact that you live in Canada?

Do you judge the rich young ruler? Would you give EVERYTHING AWAY if Jesus asked you to?

Is your faith (trust) in God, or in money?

It's definitely NOT WRONG to have things - but do things have you?

If you will awaken yourself out of your slumber...

If you can seek God passionately in the midst of your material wealth...

You CAN overcome the temptation which most of the present day church in first world nations is caught in - the lukewarm Christian temptation - and apprehend the gold refined in the fire, the white garments to cover your nakedness, and the salve to open your eyes.

Awakening awaits you...

It's Not Really Up For Debate

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." - Jesus (from Acts 1:8)

The above is the LAST THING Jesus said to his followers before his ascension. I mention it this early Monday morning because as of late I've really been thinking about a 'new strategy' or some new and exciting way to reach people with the gospel.

But the answer is so very simple - BE A WITNESS OF JESUS, WITH POWER

That's it.

If you have not experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit (see verse 5 in Acts chapter 1), you don't have the goods (power) you need to witness to anyone about Jesus. Look at how Jesus witnessed to people that he was truly the Son of God - in human flesh - POWER! Look at how the Apostles did it throughout the book of Acts - POWER!

Without a demonstration of POWER - The best you can do it have a debate.

Have you ever debated someone about the gospel? About Jesus? About the realness and reality of God? I have.

Now let me say: sometimes chatting, conversing, and dialogue can be a really positive thing - especially when the talk leads to an encounter with God.

But to debate people in order to convince and change their mind about Jesus... it's just NOT what God calls us to do.

I have learned that as easy as someone can be convinced into something - they can often be convinced out of it. Therefore all your hard work may be in vain if you have spent hours in debate with someone over the claims of Christ and the Bible, and have convinced them intellectually, only to have them be 'intellectualized' into another decision later.

Sidenote: if the Holy Spirit leads you to talk with someone for hours on end - DO IT. There is nothing wrong and everything right with conversing with people and answering tough questions about God, the Bible, the cross of Christ, the gospel, etc. The Apostle Paul conversed, taught, rebuked, exhorted, and preached for hours on end, often. Follow the Holy Spirit's lead 100%!

The issue comes when in our own strength and by our own means and mind we enter into fruitless and frustrating debate. You know what I mean if you have tried to win people to Christ!

Preaching the gospel is meant to be a display of power - witnessing to the reality of Jesus Christ, his cross, and his claims. It's a demonstration of the POWER in the name of Jesus!

It's not really up for debate.

The Way - being a Christian

Reading through a book called, "The Harvest" by Rick Joyner. Thought I would share a powerful quote.

"The Way is not a principle or formula but a Person. Walking in Truth is not just assimilating and agreeing with certain spiritual facts, but it is following a Person. Deception is not just misunderstanding doctrines or principles; deception is not being in God's will. We can know all truth accurately and still be disobedient. Our goal is more than just knowing the book of the Lord; it knowing the Lord of the book. We can memorize the Bible but now the Word Himself. Jesus is Truth, and He is the summation of all the individual truths that were restored or will be restored in the coming move. We must never allow ourselves to be distracted from the simplicity of devotion to Christ Himself." - Rick Joyner (The Harvest)

2014 - A Year of Obedience

Image Obedience - full surrender - to the will and voice of God is a subject that needs to continually revisited by the Jesus follower.

Many view Jesus as a friend of sinners and compassion filled servant hearted God-man - and that He is! But He is also Lord of all angel armies! He is commander and chief of the Universe! He is Lord of heaven and earth!

Many believers in Jesus struggle consistently in their walk with God (as I have myself - many times over) because we can sometimes forget in the midst of our consumer driven culture that the very foundation of our walk with God is our submission to Him as Lord. That is, our obedience to Him as our Master. Lord... means... Master. If you call Jesus - Lord - it means that He owns you. You have given Him your very life.

When we submit to Jesus as our Lord, we begin our true journey into following and knowing God.

Let's dig into one simple verse for a moment from Matthew 16:24 -

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." - ESV

To deny yourself, take up your cross (death to your own will) and follow Jesus UTTERLY DENOTES AND SCREAMS a life of obedience and submission to the will of God. No longer is your life your own - but you have given your life over to Jesus to follow Him completely.

It is in this context and setting of full submission - surrender and obedience to Jesus Christ and His every command for your life -  that all revelation flows. His every command - big or small - will bring peace and stability to your life and extend His Kingdom!

If you are missing obedience you are missing your foundation as a Christian. And without a foundation God cannot and will not build anything else in your life.

Could lack of obedience be the reason for your constant struggle in knowing and maintaining intimacy with God?

I encourage you strongly to make Jesus LORD in 2014 - to make this year the year of obedience to God.

The Gentleness of Father God...

"Your gentleness has made me great." - King David (from Psalm 18:35b)

What an awesome statement - and what an awesome truth!

I think this is something that many believers need to hear - not just once - but over and over and over and over and over again. And we don't just need to hear, but we need to open our hearts up to experience the gentleness and the mercy of God.

One of the things that many don't recognize about God is that although He is the Creator of the Universe - The King of Glory - The Righteous Judge of all mankind -

He is also our loving, tender, merciful, kind, gracious Heavenly Daddy God. He is SO PATIENT with us. We could share scripture verse and verse after verse highlighting the mercy of God. But here are a few -

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
14 For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust. - Psalm 103:11-14

8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. - 2 Peter 3:8-9

Someone even composed a letter with dozens of verses outlining the love and kindness of our Heavenly Father using only Bible verses- check it out here - it's really, really good!

As an aside ~
I think one of the main questions so many people ask is: if God is such loving Father - how can He send people to hell? (or questions of the like…)
And the simple answer is: He doesn't.
If someone is going to hell, they are going to have to go THROUGH God. In other words, they are going to have to choose it.
I come across many people who freely admit they are going to hell. They confess it. They know it. They reject Jesus and His grace and forgiveness. They choose to follow sin.
And God will not force them otherwise.
But He will reach out. He will call out. He will wake guys like me up at 5:10 in the morning to spend time with Him and then blog about how good He is and that He is calling YOU right now.
Do you think it's a mere coincidence you are reading this blog post right now? Or do you think perhaps God is trying to wake you up?

But He isn't just calling people lost in their sin.

He calls Christians - every… single… day.

In His Gentleness HE ATTEMPTS to make each one of us great. In other words - He beckons us towards our spiritual calling - which is our life's mandate on earth. In the context I'm speaking of - a "great person" is one who is fulfilling the vision God has placed in their heart. Someone who is fulfilling their purpose in life knows their worth. Others squander their worth and do not walk in the level of greatness God has for them.

Yet HE STILL CALLS. His hand is stretched out. Proof is in the gospel - the message of cross.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His Son… - John 3:16

Why is God such a stickler on making YOU great? Because He knows you will only be happy when you are walking in the greatness He has for you! Any loving Father wants their child to do what they are called to do! Do you think God - our Dad - is any different? He is calling in His mercy and kindness day by day. And saying, "My child - here I am. I am FOR YOU. Walk with Me and I will lift you up into the greatness I have for you."

And in this life, I don't believe He will stop calling.

The Gentleness of Father God… is what makes you great.

Changing the 10%/90%

You know it's been said that in most churches 10% of the people do 90% of the work. I have found this to be true - not so much in Dunamis Church - but in the church at large.

The reality is that there are many, many, many dormant believers. People who genuinely love God and have a trust in Him and a confidence in their eternity - because they have received Jesus as Lord of their lives and trusting in His saving grace for the forgiveness of their sin and salvation of their souls. They have been baptized in water and perhaps even baptized in the Holy Spirit - they speak in tongues and perhaps even hear the voice of God. All of these things and many more are available to EVERY believer. Yet in all of this many remain unfruitful. There could be many reasons for this but today I just want to highlight one:

Many simply never press through to the point of death to self-will - enough to actually BE HIS DISCIPLE (follower).

Can you believe that? I really believe that someone can have a real love and appreciation for Jesus and all that He's done - but yet never truly, deeply - follow Him. You can follow someone's principles for life - yet not follow THEM. You can listen and agree mentally and even emotionally with someone's teachings - yet not follow THEM.

Look at these words of Jesus:

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?" - Matthew 16:24-26

How often do you actually DENY yourself - what you want, pleasure, the stuff you want to do on a Friday or Saturday night - on a week night? When work is over and the time is not "your time" - what do you do?

Do you consider the will of God? Or simply veg out in front of the tube?

These and other questions of the same nature are important simply because we need to ask ourselves why many of us are not fulfilling the great commission. If you are a believer and your life doesn't feel full of God and you are not excited about His mandate and mission for your life - you are missing out big time!

Not to say that there isn't time for relaxation and vegging out - but to most definitely ask the question if the will of God is sought and considered on a daily basis?

This is where the quote on quote - 90% - are missing it. They haven't crossed the road of the cross fully. They haven't died - so they CAN LIVE. They haven't laid down their agendas, will, desires at the feet of Jesus - to really know His agenda, will, and desires for them.

I challenge you to ask yourself this question: is my life laid down at the feet of the Master of the Universe - Jesus Christ?

If it is not, I encourage you with all my heart to lay it down today. Begin to seek Him with all your heart! Get into the church - PLUG IN - that God is leading you to. If you don't know where He is leading you - just start going to churches that passionately worship Jesus. That you don't have to necessarily rock a suit and tie to fit in - and that you sense the Spirit of God moving!

God wants to increase the number of believers that are fruitful for His kingdom - the question is: are you going to be one?

Wounded and Running

Image This describes the state of many, many believers and unbelievers (in Jesus Christ and His kingdom) I've come into contact with.

Life wounds.

Friends wound.

Church members wound.

Family members wound.

Circumstances wound.

And when we allow woundedness to fester - a wounded spirit developes. In other words a wounded attitude and/or demeanour. The cards of life always feel stacked against us (or so we believe). It seems that way, because we can filter life and every circumstance we face through the lenses of a wounded spirit.

We develop a wounded spirit when we don't walk in continual forgiveness and grace towards those who do wound us. THAT can sometimes be a hard thing to do, especially when the wound was a significant one. There are evils which happen to people on a daily basis; evils that people choose to do to one another. Evils that God in His love weeps when happens - and yet He refuses to control anyone - and He refuses to control you now. If you are wounded and on the run from God, He is calling you, but will not force you to come to Him.

But whatever we walk through in life, if we don't release forgiveness we become bitter, angry, and confused - and eventually we find ourselves wounded and on the run FROM the ONLY ONE who can bring us peace - Jesus.

Although we may even have a sense of God pursuing us in our woundedness, it can still feel hard to surrender our pain to Him. But to surrender, forgive, release, and move towards Jesus with our whole hearts is the only way to healing.

But yet many of us are still on the run. We run by escaping the feeling and knowledge of God's pursuit. We overindulge in things that are meant to be a blessing - and for us they turn into a curse. The pursuit of pleasure through money, stuff, entertainment, sex, alcohol… to name a few.

You many be on the run right now - but I urge you to return to Jesus. Come and fall at His feet, and give Him your life again. He loves you, and His arms are open wide to you.

He forgave and now forgives you all of all your sin against Him and people - and He died on the cross to reconnect you to God - your heavenly Father. But you MUST forgive those who hurt you if you want to heal and obtain the freedom Jesus purchased for you on the cross. If you are willing to do this (and it is your choice), say this prayer with me,

"Father, I forgive ____________________ for doing ______________________ to me. I give them a gift they don't deserve… my forgiveness. Because Father you sent your Son, Jesus, to die for me - to forgive me - when I didn't deserve it. I take that same grace and release it to ____________________ - and I give them to you. I tear up the I.O.U.'s - they owe me nothing. I release all this pain to you Father, and I trust you to heal my heart as I daily walk with and follow you. In Jesus name - Amen."

It can start there. Repeat this prayer for each person God brings to your heart. Repeat it over and over if you need to. And remember, forgiveness is not always immediately a feeling - but a conscious choice. You don't have to feel love for someone, or trust that person, or be in relationship with that person, to forgive them and release them.

And when you forgive them, you actually set yourself free of the anger and bitterness that has been welling up - maybe for years.

Be encouraged to connect with local born-again Bible believing church - so the process of freedom and healing can continue.

I hope, if you are on the run, that you will change course, and begin to run with the healer!

Here is a great video if you want to go deeper into forgiveness - by John Arnott - an amazing father and man of God. Check it below when you get some time!

I will never stop inviting...

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRXP9OgsXKM&feature=em-uploademail] 15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him (Jesus) heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

16 Then He (Jesus) said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ 20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’22 And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ 23 Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’” - Luke 14:15-23

This is exactly what I plan on doing for the rest of my life. I want to passionately invite people into the kingdom of God! The way we grow in the kingdom though, is to simply grow in relationship with the King of the kingdom - Jesus! The way we grow in relationship with King Jesus is obviously to spend time with him, to learn His ways, His heart, His will, His purpose for our lives. But a powerful relationship with God also must be intricately woven into the church (the people of God) - because the church of Jesus is the body of Christ (the substance of Christ) on earth.

As the church we invite people into salvation! We compel them with hearts full of love and compassion to come into the grace of God, and be reborn with the nature of Christ, having their sins washed away by the all-powerful blood of Jesus.

And we grow together as the people of God. Our lives interwoven into Jesus and each other. Living lives of love and passion and purity. Living lives of focus and intentionality on the mission of God.

I have decided to obey Jesus - and find every way I can in the grace and peace of the Holy Spirit - to invite people into the reality of living wholeheartedly for Jesus Christ! Even if people come up with excuse after excuse why they cannot make time to live for God (even though we have are breath and very life IN HIM)... I will not stop inviting!

Are you willing to fight for your dream?

There are so many people out there dreaming, and that is a good thing!

But to just dream is not going to get you us anywhere - we need to add action to our dreams. You know what you call someone who dreams but isn't doing practical things to make their dreams to pass?

We say things like, "Ah, Billy is just a dreamer". And that has a negative connotation because what we mean is, "Billy isn't doing anything significant with his life, because although he has great dreams, we know there they're not going to come to pass because he's not doing anything about them now."

There are three things that I know about walking in your dream:

1 - it's going to be something you love - and it's going to be awesome and fun!

2 - it's going to involve immense intentionality and purposeful living. This will manifest in tangible goals or mile markers letting you know you are incrementally fulfilling your dream.

3 - it's going to scare you. Because the devil knows what your dreaming about, and he will intentionally put obstacles and throw fear and discouragement at you in a multitude of forms to try to dissuade you from going after your dream

I have some dreams in my heart... and they're big. So far I've fulfilled about 1% of my dream - and I'm realizing I need to get even sharper. I need to grow in more maturity, wisdom, passion, purity, character, integrity, boldness... and all the things that propel people forward into the greatness of living that enables them to fulfill their dreams?

What are you dreaming about?

And what incremental steps can you take to make your dream happen today? This month? This year?

The Promises of God

Rainbow It's absolutely astonishing to read through the Bible and see what God promises those who love and follow Him.

Just look at the rainbow - for instance. After the flood God says, to the effect, "I will never destroy the earth again with water, I promise, for a covenant I give you the rainbow."

Sure, the rainbow has scientific and mathematical roots - everything God creates does! Let's be real - God is the ultimate scientist and mathematician. He created everything.

I don't believe in magic. But I do believe in God's power to create anything He wants to creates. He is after all, God.

But whether or not you believe that (I of course do because I know God personally, feel His presence every day, know His voice, am getting to know Him more and more as I seek Him, and have been utterly transformed by His love), if you don't, I will believe for both of us right now tell you it's absolutely true!

Here are 10 promises found in the Bible (there are hundreds, maybe thousands more) you can start with today. Be encouraged to read the Word of God every day you can this year - find His great and precious promises - thank Him for them - stand on them - believe them. They are AVAILABLE for you, but may not happen if you don't apprehend them by faith. Remember, faith is a choice we have each and every day. Faith in God is believing what you are hearing FROM God. If you are reading this blog post right now, why are reading it right now? Are you hearing from God THROUGH his post? I believe that you are! So let your faith in God be strengthened today as you read below!

2 Peter 1:4

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Philippians 4:19

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:37-39

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Proverbs 1:33

But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.”

John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Romans 10:9

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
